Winner | Review by: Gal Balaban
Winner reteams star Emilia Jones with director Susanna Fogel after 2023's Cat Person. Well, at least that movie knew how to occasionally enjoy itself. Winner is a film about thought-provoking subject material that decides to be more of a coming-of-age comedy than a paranoid political thriller, and make it’s protagonist as unlikable as possible on the page, making it hard for us to try and sympathize with her decisions.
Though actors like Emilia Jones, Kathryn Newton, Connie Britton, and Danny Ramirez are occasionally engaging, the interesting subject material has been given to them in the form of a script that’s hollow and diminishes lots of its questions with odd narration and comedy.
