Alien: Romulus | Review by: Luke Elisio
One of horror’s most iconic film series, the “Alien” franchise has sadly seen its share of critical failures. From the panned “Alien 3” to the divisive “Alien: Covenant,” many have tried and failed to replicate the precise combination of awesome action, heart-pounding horror, and extraordinary effects that made the series first two entries so remarkable. “Alien: Romulus,” an interquel set between the first two films, breathes a new sense of hope into the franchise as it perfectly delivers all the highlights that made people fall in love with this series to begin with. Though it shouldn’t be a surprise the series took a turn for the better considering “Alien: Romulus” is helmed by Fede Álvarez, the writer / director of “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe.” Studios should be lining up to have Álvarez direct their movies. A master filmmaker with a true talent for storytelling, Álvarez is a director to watch. He knows how to craft a genuinely thrilling horror movie and what’s more, you can tell the passion he puts into his craft. With “Alien: Romulus” Álvarez delivers a movie that is equal parts a loving and tonally accurate homage to the original film, and a terrifying new take more than capable of standing on its own two feet.
“Alien: Romulus” has the look, feel, and grit of science-fiction movies from the 1970s and 1980s. It’s clear that it wasn’t all filmed against a green screen which makes the movie as a whole look all the more real! The practical effects are just as stunning and add an extra layer of creepiness to a movie that already has no problem sending shivers down the spines of viewers. Equally as impressive are the lead performances from Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. Their chemistry easily sells the many emotional moments of this movie, and both are given the opportunity to show off their considerable range and talents. “Alien: Romulus” is the type of exhilarating, scary, horror / sci-fi / action movie you spill your popcorn during. The kind you have to watch on a big screen with others being just as scared as you are and squirming in their seats. Like “The Fall Guy” or “Twisters” this is yet another summer blockbuster that will get people excited to go see movies on the big screen. In fact, this movie may just breed a new generation of diehard “Alien” fans. The first act may be the slightest bit slow, but once the action starts, even the vacuum of space won't be enough to keep viewers from screaming.
